If you're here, you're probably trying to name a Warrior Cats OC and you want it to feel right. Not "Sparklestar" or "Deathclaw" (we've all been there, no judgment), but something that could actually exist in the books.
Here's the thing—the Erins actually follow pretty strict naming rules, even if they break them sometimes. Once you understand the system, naming becomes way easier. And honestly? Kind of fun.
The Actual Rules (That the Books Follow)
Okay, let's get the boring-but-important stuff out of the way first.
Rule #1: Prefixes Come From Nature
Warrior cats are named after things cats would actually encounter in the wild. They don't know what "midnight" means conceptually—they just know dark nights. They don't know "death"—they know blood, bone, and carrion.
Good prefixes: Things cats can see, smell, hear, or touch
- Plants: Ivy, Fern, Bracken, Thistle, Petal, Moss
- Animals: Sparrow, Robin, Fox, Badger, Owl, Mouse
- Weather: Rain, Storm, Cloud, Snow, Frost, Sun
- Terrain: Stone, Pebble, Mud, Sand, River, Marsh
- Colors: Red, Gray, White, Black, Tawny, Golden
- Body features: Spotted, Striped, Long, Crooked
Rule #2: Suffixes Reflect Personality or Appearance
The suffix is given when a cat becomes a warrior, and it's supposed to mean something. Leaders pick suffixes that reflect who the cat has become.
Common Suffixes & What They Usually Mean
Rule #3: The Name Should Flow
This is the part nobody tells you. Say the name out loud. Does it sound like something a cat could yowl across the camp during a battle?
"Fernshade!" ✅ Yeah, that works.
"Brackenwhisker!" ✅ Solid.
"Spottedleafpelt!" ❌ Too long, too clunky.
Two syllables in the prefix + one or two in the suffix = sweet spot.

Mistakes I See All The Time
I spend way too much time on Warriors Amino and DeviantArt. Here's what makes me cringe (lovingly):
1. The "Too Edgy" Name
"Bloodfang," "Deathclaw," "Scarsoul"—look, I get it. Dark cats are cool. But queens don't name their kits things like "Deathkit." The prefix has to work for a tiny kitten.
Instead: If you want an edgy vibe, use nature-dark names. "Ravenkit" becomes "Ravenclaw." "Shadekit" becomes "Shadefrost." Same energy, but believable.
2. The "Too Pretty" Name
"Crystalmoon," "Starshine," "Diamondheart"—cats don't know what crystals or diamonds are! They live in the forest!
Instead: "Crystalmoon" → "Iceshine" (ice exists in nature). "Diamondheart" → "Brightheart" (simple but effective).
3. The "Repeat Problem"
"Fernfern," "Stonerock," names where both parts mean basically the same thing. It happens more than you'd think.
My Personal Favorites (Steal These)
After years of making OCs, here are names I'm genuinely proud of:
Names I Actually Use
Quick Reference: Prefix + Suffix Combos
If you're stuck, just pick one from each column:
Mix & Match
Prefixes: Alder, Bracken, Cedar, Dove, Fern, Hazel, Ivy, Jay, Lark, Maple, Oak, Pebble, Raven, Sage, Thrush, Wren
Suffixes: -breeze, -claw, -fall, -fern, -flight, -frost, -heart, -leap, -pelt, -shade, -shine, -song, -splash, -storm, -stream, -whisker
Seriously, just combine them randomly. "Alderfrost." "Dovestream." "Wrenleap." They all work because they follow the rules.

Generate Warrior Names →Final Thoughts
Here's the thing about Warrior Cats names: they should feel earthy and possible. If you can imagine a queen in the nursery saying "I'll name him Thornkit, for the thorns that protected us during his birth"—that's the vibe you want.
Don't overthink it. The best names are simple ones that grow on you. Firestar is just "fire" + "star." Graystripe is just "gray" + "stripe." The magic isn't in complexity—it's in the stories you tell with them.
Now go make some OCs. And if you end up on Amino, maybe I'll see you there. 🐱
